Description:
In 1924, two Japanese expats, Jingoro Hino and Kiyotaka Shindo of Cook County Illinois, set out to modernise and simplify the traditional Hanafuda deck. The scores were printed on the cards, and the seasonal and flower associations replaced with four symbols. The poetry scrolls were replaced with ribbons. The result (recreated from the patent document in a 1920s Japanese Romanji font) is elegant and intriguing.
